What is the Alonso Quijano Schools of Writers?
The School is a vital centre for writing, aimed at people who love language and literature and who want to turn their passion into a career, or to simply deepen their pleasure of reading and writing.
The Alonso Quijano School of Writers is the first literary school in Castilla La Mancha. We provide students with the proper tools and methods that will give them the opportunity to develop their craft and their creativity, while working closely with some of the finest writers and experts. Talent cannot be taught, but it is in our belief that the techniques can be developed and encouraged.
Where is it located?
Our School is located at the Convento de Santa Clara, in Alcázar de San Juan, Province of Ciudad Real. It is approximately 150 Km. south of Madrid.
Alcázar de San Juan is a city situated in the heart of La Mancha and it has an excellent communication network, allowing travellers to easily reach any place in Spain, by either train or road.
The Convento de Santa Clara is an old XVI century monastery, perfectly restored and rehabilitated, recovering the peace and tranquillity that the Clares nuns enjoyed while living there. It is now a cultural and comfortable space where you can enjoy exploring the landscape where Don Quixote and Sancho Panza once left for adventures.
The Convent of Santa Clara is now the Hotel Convento de Santa Clara www.hotelconventosantaclara.com and is the meeting place of the Fórum Alonso Quijano, location of our Alonso Quijano School of Writers.
Our Programs
The School has different programs, each one depending on the level and the availability of the students.

According to the availability of the students, the School offers different literary courses and workshops in different levels: beginners, advanced, and master programs.
Regular lessons will be during the weekends, but we can also offer tailor-made courses for students that come from abroad and wish to have a course in our School.
We work in close cooperation with the Escola d’Escriptura de l’ Ateneu Barcelonés, in Barcelona, and we are able to offer online courses to our students.
For those who wish to take a course in narrative, nonfiction, poetry, writing methods or storytelling, a proven record of commitment to their craft will be duly encouraged, and they will, at all times, participate in a dynamic literary community that is actively engaged in all aspects of the literary arts: The Alonso Quijano Reading Club, the ESCRIBE (WRITE) Publication, and the “Don Quixote Paths” which are different itineraries that follow the paths of Don Quixote, through diverse small villages and towns in Castilla La Mancha.
We can also offer support in correction and publishing of works and tailor-made courses for companies and enterprises.
TAILOR-MADE COURSES
Personal attention
At all times, students can count on personal attention by our committed teachers who will always offer support and advice. Each student will have a tutor who will be only more than happy to help him or her solve any doubts they may have.
Objectives
Our aim is to provide an opportunity for involved students, to work and learn to write. Though no processes of training can ensure success, we explore all possibilities and limitations, and we offer the tools to help achieve it. It is our conviction that although talent cannot be taught, we can, as a minimum, be confident that it can be nurtured.
We propose:
To help students strengthen their own ideas for writing.
To assist in the writing of literary texts, and facilitate students’ craft of expressing properly their sensations, dialogues, and points of view.
To teach the mechanisms of planning, construction and placing the elements which take part in a text, a novel or a poetry piece.
To know and to use the different literary stylistic resources to obtain the maximum expressivity in a written passage.
To obtain the necessary literary knowledge to be able to apply it in the progress of a text.
We intend to give our students enough confidence to develop their critical book awareness, and their ability to analyse and enjoy the texts they read.
Our goal is to make the Alonso Quijano School of Writers an international reference centre for literary culture exchange in the Creative Writing programs.
Methodology
The curriculum of our Creative Writing Programs varies according to the nature of the program. Analytical, critical and theoretical aspects will not be the only tools that will be taught. We emphasize the need for writing and reading and it will be explored in all forms of written expression.
In truth, our methodology manifests the essence of what we are about. We want to teach our students what it can mean to write and to be a writer. We will combine theory and practice, with the analysis of texts within small, discussion-focused groups. We do not imagine that our methodology is right for everybody, but we think our tradition is worthy. Those who need and respect the collegial company of their friends will be able to learn from their own mistakes and the mistakes of others.
